Maszoperia: a fishermen’s company

For centuries, on the Hel Peninsula, a “maszoperia” was a community of fishermen. Each brought a boat, nets or his own hands, and the catch was shared fairly. The maszoperia also looked after the widows and children of fishermen lost at sea.

Our restaurant took its name from it. It stands in a fisherman’s house built in 1827 — the oldest in town — on Wiejska, the old fishermen’s street.

A door in two halves

The front door is split in two, and each half closes separately. The story goes that a fisherman coming home a little unsteady came in through the lower half. The upper half belonged to his wife: she chatted with the neighbours over it and sold the fish her husband had caught.
